Anaemias – mild to severe; regenerative and nonregenerative; acute and chronic. This course aims to discuss the causes, consequences and treatment of all types of anaemia and, crucially the nurse’s role in managing anaemic patients. We will also discuss the causes of bleeding and a rational approach to dealing with it – ranging from rodenticide toxicity to von Willebrand’s disease. We will also talk about fluid therapy in bleeding patients – crystalloids, colloids and bovine haemoglobin solutions. Canine and feline blood typing and blood transfusions will be covered with plenty of practical tips. Blood banks and donor selection will be discussed and you’ll go home armed with confidence that you can take control of the next transfusion patient that presents in your practice. Not only that but you’ll be able to do a perfect blood smear every time!
