Advanced procedures for the Bovine Practitioner
Course Tutor: Owen Atkinson BVSc, MRCVS, DCHP
Trainees will be able to select the appropriate animals for and to perform the following procedures. They will also understand how to interpret the results.
  • Abdominocentiesis
  • Liver biopsy
  • Ruminocentesis
  • Bladder catheterisation
  • Trans tracheal washing
  • Blood transfusion
  • Transfaunation
  • Acid based disturbance and fluid therapy
At the end of this module trainees will, for each procedure, be able to:
  • List the indications for each procedure
  • Know the contra-indications
  • Communicate with farmers about the need (or not) for the procedure
  • Select appropriate animal or group of animals
  • Describe and prepare the equipment required
  • Explain suitable and safe procedures of restraint
  • Prepare the animals adequately
  • Perform the procedure
  • Discuss possible complications
  • Understand the limitations of the procedure
  • Know how to handle, store and transport samples when required
  • Perform and / or arrange any testing of samples collected
  • Interpret the results
  • Communicate with farmers about the results and advise on the actions to be taken.
